Weight Loss & Type 2 Diabetes Prevention Study

You may qualify if your Body-Mass Index (BMI) is greater than or equal to 27 kg/m² (Asian-American ≥25 kg/m²). Calculate your BMI.

If your score is 5 or higher, you are eligible for this study.

Maybe. If you are overweight/obese and meet other eligibility criteria, we will invite you for the screening/baseline visit and check your HbA1c and blood glucose level.

No.  People who are taking insulin or diagnosed with type 1 or type 2 diabetes are not eligible.

If you lost more than 10% of your body weight in the past 6 months, you are not eligible for the study.  In addition, if you are currently participating in a weight loss or lifestyle change program, you are not eligible for the study. 

No. However, once your family member or friend completes the study, you may be able to participate in the study as long as you meet all eligibility criteria.

No, we do not provide a smartphone.

No, people who meet all eligibility criteria are welcome to participate in the study! 

Yes, as long as you can walk continuously for one mile or 20 minutes without any chest pain or shortness of breath.

In return for your time and effort, you will be paid up to $100 in total for completing all study requirements. Upon completing the screening/baseline visit, randomization, or 5-month visit, you will be paid $10 in cash. Upon completion of the 12-month (final) visit, you will be paid $40 in cash. 

In addition, if you do not reschedule your Zoom calls and your office visits, you will be paid an additional $20 in cash at the 12-month visit. For your transportation, we will provide a UCSF parking sticker for your visit or reimburse your public transportation fees up to $15/visit per participant.
